Need stressed to encourage sports for promoting business activities August 27, 2013
Meeting at ICCI

Pakistan has great potential to excel in tennis and private sector should come forward to sponsor tennis players in the country that will also help in generating lot of business and economic activities, said Syed Kaleem Imam, President, Pakistan Tennis Federation while addressing business community at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

He said Pakistan Tennis Federation is playing a vital role in the development of domestic, national and international tennis in Pakistan. He said with his efforts, Pakistan re-entered the Fed Cup in 2011 after a gap of about 10 years. He said tennis is an expensive game and demands lot of hard work, therefore, the cooperation of public & private sector business organizations could play a significant for its better growth in the country.

He said we have to spend annually Rs.5-6-million to organize events and urged that businessmen should cooperate with PTF by sponsoring players so that our maximum players could participate in international events and earn more laurels for the country.

He said the politics in our Tennis Associations is badly hurting the promotion of this game as the office bearers are more interested in positions instead of contributing to the development of tennis. He said all sports bodies should be completely depoliticized to promote sports talent and to unleash the real potential of Pakistan in the field of sports. He invited business community to become members of PTF and avail its sports facilities free of cost to play tennis.

In his welcome address, Zafar Bakhtawari, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry Pakistan is currently divided on sectarian and ethnic basis and sports is the most powerful tool to promote national unity and generate economic activities because it offers enormous potential as a driver of economic progress and development.

He said sports events now generate billions of dollars trade & commerce and strengthen national cohesion, but it is unfortunate that terrorism and security problems have deprived Pakistani nation of international sports events due to which economy is also losing immense potential of business activities.

He said government should encourage tennis and all other sports so that international sports could re-enter Pakistan and our country could regain its lost image by showing its real potential to the world. He lauded the services of Syed Kaleem Imam as former IG Police Islamabad, President PTF and Deputy Police Commissioner Operations in UN at Darful Sudan. He said ICCI Sports Committee is playing an active role in promotion of sports in Islamabad and assured that ICCI would cooperate with PTF for promotion of tennis in the country.
