The Federal Capital, Islamabad is known as the one of the modern cities in the world, but the public transportation system is wage in the city, stated Mahfooz Elahi, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry while addressing a meeting of the transport committee of ICCI.
The President demanded that Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousaf RazaGilani should take a serious note of this issue and give instructions to relevant departments for introducing the latest transportation system in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
A large number of workforce and general public daily travel between the twin cities and they have to use vans and taxis as means of transportation, which is quite expensive, he said.
Mr.Mahfooz Elahi stated that especially working women, children and families face great problems, while traveling in these transports, as there is no proper mechanism of a separate compartment for females.
The government must on priority basis, should arrange big busses to facilitate travelers and to help save expense, which they usually incur by travelling through taxis and vans, President said.
Mahfooz Elahi stressed that to solve the problem of transport of twin city, Punjab Government, CDA and RDA should be taken on board. He said that CDA department comes under Cant division, ICT and Ministry of Interior, whereas Punjab government deals with RDA, and suggested that government should invite a meeting of all these stakeholder organizations to come up with a concrete strategy to develop a plan to start a new transportation service.
President ICCI appealed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for taking interest in this matter and offered Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry platform in arranging meeting of all stakeholder organizations.
He further said that public and private partnership must be encouraged to immediately resolve the problem of transportation in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
