Industrial Consultation Workshop on Capacity Building and Skills Enhancement for Engineers at ICCI

The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) in collaboration
with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) organized Industrial Consultation Workshop
on Capacity Building and Skills Enhancement of Engineers. Engr. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed
Sheikh Additional Registrar Pakistan Engineering Council, Dr. Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui
Convener, PEC Committee on Engineers Skills Development (ESDC), Engr. Dr. Ali Sajid
Co-Convener ESDC, Engr. Tahir Shamshad Ex-President NESPAK, members of
engineers’ community, representatives of industry and various organizations were
present at the occasion.
Addressing the workshop, Tahir Abbasi, Acting President, Islamabad Chamber of
Commerce & Industry said that engineers were playing important role in the economic
development of countries. However, he said that in Pakistan, universities were more
focused on theoretical education of engineers due to which they were unable to
perform up to the requirements of industry. He stressed that universities in
collaboration with industry should give more focus on practical education and training
of engineers that would improve their employability and lead to better growth of
industry. He emphasized that engineers should find out solutions of industry problems
to promote industrial efficiency.
Saif ur Rahman Khan, Vice President ICCI said that Chamber was ready to cooperate
with PEC for providing internship to engineers in industrial sector so that they could
get practical experience and play effective role in industrial development.
Dr. Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui Convener-ESDC, Engr. Dr. Ali Sajid Co-Convener ESDC and
Engr. Tahir Shamshad Ex-President NESPAK said that engineers were needed to
achieve global skills including problem-solving, decision making, communication,
motivation, leadership, team building, people management, goal setting etc. They
stressed that universities should inculcate innovative thinking, analytical thinking and
critical thinking in engineers that were very important for absorption in current
market.
Engr. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed Sheikh, Additional Registrar, Pakistan Engineering Council said
that ICCI should cooperate with PEC in absorbing engineers as interns in local industry.
He said that PEC was earnestly working for the professional growth and skill
enhancement of growing engineering community. He said that PEC was working to
develop a comprehensive mechanism for skills development of engineers and today’s
workshop was a part of consultation with stakeholders to know about new ideas for
capacity building and skills enhancement of engineers.
The representatives of industry, engineering community and various organizations also
spoke at the occasion and presented many proposals to improve the employability of
engineers so that they could play more productive role in the nation building.
